This one is a no-brainer. If you’re going to be in Austin, you should make this activity a priority. Capitol building tours are free and typically last thirty minutes, so it won’t take up your whole day. Tour guides are knowledgeable and will share the rich history of the building, Texasand the legislature.

Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail

Located in central Austin, Lady Bird Lake has trails along the water that are perfect for biking or walking. If you have a dog, or five, bring them along to play in the dog park! Kayak and paddleboard rentals are also available, if watersports are more your style. If you’re into the outdoors, you won’t want to miss this stop.

Lyndon Baines JohnsonPresidential Library&Museum

Here’s one for the history buff. Located on The University of Texas at Austin campus, LBJ Presidential Library features multiple political themed permanent exhibits and is one of fourteen presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. Tickets are affordable and free on certain patriotic holidays, like Memorial Day and Independence Day.

Barton Springs Pool

Calling all Robert Redford fans! If you’d like to swim in the waters this famous actor learned to swim in, you’re in luck. This three-acre pool is fed from underground springs and averages a temperature of 68 to 70 degrees year round. The pool is open from 5a.m. to 10p.m. but only offers guarded swim from 8a.m. to 6p.m. Admission fees vary, but are inexpensive and definitely worth it for a day filled with water and sun!

Graffiti Park at Castle Hills (Hope Outdoor Gallery)

Don’t worry, art lovers! We didn’t forget about you. The Hope Outdoor Gallery is one of the largest outdoor galleries in the United States and features a colorful display of mixed media on concrete. The park was designed to provide community artists of all kinds the opportunity to display large-scale art inspired by positive and educational messaging.

South Congress Avenue, or “SoCo” as it’s better known, is a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike. This iconic street features boutiques, bars, eateries, galleries and live music venues, perfect for a group outing. Every first Thursday is the SoCo block party, where the street stays open late and so do the patrons. Don’t forget to pick up a pair of authentic cowboy boots!

Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge Bats

From March through November of each year, a wide range of locals, bat watchers and enthusiasts congregate near dusk at theAnn Richards Congress Avenue Bridge for a batty night of fun with the South Congress Bridge Bats. The bats in Austin put on a spectacular show with their nightly aerial flight of 60-plus miles per hour and 2-mile high flight pattern. And the battiest thing about it – it’s FREE!

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festival is held in the Spring every year.
